How to Delete Your Telegram Account
Telegram is a popular messaging app known for its focus on speed and security. However, there may come a time when you decide to delete your Telegram account permanently. Whether it’s due to privacy concerns, switching to another messaging platform, or simply wanting to reduce your digital footprint, deleting your Telegram account is a straightforward process.
This guide will walk you through the steps to delete your Telegram account, either immediately or after a period of inactivity.
Important Considerations Before Deleting Your Telegram Account
Before proceeding with the deletion, keep in mind the following:
- Permanent Data Loss: Deleting your account will permanently erase all your messages, contacts, groups, and other data associated with your Telegram account. This data cannot be recovered.
- Linked Devices: If you’ve linked multiple devices to your Telegram account, the deletion will apply to all of them.
- Reactivation: Once deleted, you can’t reactivate the same account or recover the username. If you wish to return to Telegram, you’ll need to create a new account.
Deleting Your Telegram Account Immediately
If you want to delete your Telegram account right away, follow these steps:
Step 1: Visit the Deactivation Page
Telegram doesn’t offer the option to delete your account directly through the app. Instead, you’ll need to use a web browser. Visit the Telegram Deactivation Page.
Step 2: Enter Your Phone Number
On the deactivation page, enter the phone number associated with your Telegram account, including the country code (e.g., +1 for the USA).
Step 3: Confirm with a Code
Telegram will send a confirmation code to your Telegram app. Enter this code on the deactivation page to proceed.
Step 4: Delete Your Account
After entering the code, you’ll be redirected to a page with the option to delete your account. Click Delete Account and confirm your decision when prompted.
Automatic Account Deletion After Inactivity
Telegram also offers the option to automatically delete your account after a period of inactivity. Here’s how you can set it up:
Step 1: Open the Telegram App
Launch the Telegram app on your mobile device.
Step 2: Go to Settings
Tap on the three horizontal lines (menu icon) in the top-left corner to access the menu. From there, select Settings.
Step 3: Choose Privacy and Security
In the Settings menu, tap on Privacy and Security.
Step 4: Set Account Self-Destruct
Scroll down to the Delete my account if away for section. Here, you can choose the period after which your account will be automatically deleted if you remain inactive (options range from 1 month to 1 year).
